Summit with Girl & Her Backpack

 

For girls ages 14-17, Summit is a 4-week program that involves CPR certification, climbing lessons, wilderness safety, and backpacking Red Pine.

IMPORTANT: Girl & Her Backpack is focusing on expanding their Camp Rise program in 2024. We are hoping to continue The Summit Program in 2025.

When & Where:

Wednesday, July 19th : Meet & Greet, Basic Wilderness Guidelines

Saturday, July 22nd : Grandeur Peak without packs

Wednesday, July 26th : CPR Certification

Saturday, July 29th : Lake Blanche with Packs 1/2 full

Wednesday, August 2nd : Climb Night at The Front SLC

Saturday, August 5th : Grandeur Peak with 3/4 full packs

August 12th - 13th : Backpacking Red Pine

*Wednesday classes are from 5:30 pm to 7 pm unless noted

What is provided during the backpacking trip?

All major gear is provided (backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, hydration system, headlamp, etc.) to decrease comparison and create gear equality. Meals and snacks are also provided.

Backpacking Lodging: We will be backpacking in, participants will sleep in 3 and 4-person tents with girls in the same age group. Hiking Leaders and instructors will sleep in tents separate from attendees.

Cost: We operate on a sliding scale cost based on family income, a 30% deposit will be due within 48 hours of registering to confirm your spot.

Under $35,000: Free

$35,000 to $50,000 : $100-200

$50,000 to $75,000 : $200-$350

$75,000 to $100,000 : $350-$650

$100,000 to $150,000 : $650-850 (anything beyond $750 will be donated towards a scholarship for other camp participants)

$150,000+ : $750-1,000 (anything beyond $750 will be donated towards a scholarship for other camp participants)

Safety: All staff are First Aid/CPR Certified. Two of the staff will be certified wilderness first responders through EMT Utah. Should any serious accident or illness occur at camp, the child’s parent/guardian will be notified immediately via a radio spot. All campers will sign a waiver stating they have not experienced symptoms of COVID or been exposed to someone with COVID within a certain time-frame. Temperatures will be taken with a no-touch thermometer upon drop-off.

FAQ

How often does the group meet?

We will meet twice per week. We meet once during the week (on Wednesday evenings) for skills and once over the weekends (on Saturday mornings) to hike around Salt Lake and Utah County. At the end of the program, we will do a 2-day, 1-night backpacking trip to Red Pine.

How many spots are available for registration?

There are 12 spots available for registration.

What does my daughter need to pack for the backpacking trip?

The packing list will be posted by March 1st, 2022.

What is the Itinerary for the backpacking trip?

The itinerary will be shared by May 1st, 2022 with parents.

Is transportation provided?

Transportation is not provided unless asked. If you need transportation for your daughter, please email Ashley at ashley@girlandherbackpack.com - she will be happy to arrange transportation! Transportation will be provided for the backpacking trip but there will be a common meeting point.

Do you provide scholarships?

We provide scholarships to at least 30% of our camp registrants on a financial need-basis. Please contact ashley@girlandherbackpack.com if you are interested in applying for a scholarship.
